Ysgol Clawdd Offa
Ysgol Clawdd Offa, a rural primary school in North Wales, embarked on a transformative journey to modernise its educational environment by replacing outdated technology with new mobile devices. Prior to 2018, the school faced significant challenges due to its ageing technology. The reliance on old desktop suites and a large inventory of outdated iPad models hindered effective teaching and learning.
Recognising the need for change, the school leadership initiated a comprehensive digital transformation strategy aimed at making the curriculum more accessible and engaging for students, they chose to work closely with MCC Digital as their Apple Education Specialist.
In 2018, the school made a pivotal decision to trade in its old devices for modern mobile technology. This shift not only revitalised the learning environment but also aligned with the school's vision for innovative teaching. The funding obtained from the trade-in was effectively channelled into a consistent Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for teachers. This initiative ensured that educators were equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to integrate new technology into their teaching practices.
The commitment to professional development has been instrumental in the school’s success. CPD sessions were tailored to the specific needs of the staff, fostering confidence and competence in using new devices. By actively involving governors in the planning, the school secured broader support for its digital initiatives, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in educational transformation. Teachers began to explore new methodologies, utilising technology to create interactive and dynamic learning experiences that engaged students more effectively.
To facilitate a smooth transition to new technology, Ysgol Clawdd Offa established a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the technical services team at MCC Digital who also provide support directly to Denbighshire Council. This partnership provided the school with ongoing technical support, critical for maintaining the functionality of the new devices. As a result, the frequency of technical visits drastically reduced from 35 to just 10 per year. This significant reduction not only saved money but also freed up time for teachers to focus on curriculum delivery rather than troubleshooting technical issues. Such a strategic shift exemplifies how effective resource management can enhance educational outcomes.
In alignment with its commitment to sustainability, Ysgol Clawdd Offa continues to utilise MCC Digital’s Recycling Services to responsibly dispose of legacy technology. By recycling old devices, the school mitigated its environmental impact and contributed to a broader culture of sustainability within the community. This initiative underscored the school’s role as a responsible steward of resources, promoting environmental awareness among students and staff alike.
The digital transformation at Ysgol Clawdd Offa has not only improved access to the curriculum but has also enhanced the teaching practices within the school. Through partnerships with local authorities and a strong focus on ongoing support for educators, the school has become a model for other rural institutions navigating similar challenges. With thoughtful implementation and community involvement, Ysgol Clawdd Offa demonstrates that even schools in rural settings can thrive in an increasingly digital world, creating an engaging and sustainable educational environment for all.
